What to Expect from Your Real Estate Agent

A useful working relationship starts with clear expectations, reliable communication and room to ask questions.

Revised October 19, 2026 · General educational information.

Agree on the work and communication

Discuss your priorities, budget, timing and preferred way to communicate. Ask what services your agreement covers, how compensation works and who will handle each part of the process. You should understand the arrangement before moving forward.

Expect information that supports your decisions

Buyers can ask for help comparing properties and identifying questions for inspections, financing and association review. Sellers can ask for a pricing discussion grounded in comparable properties and a specific marketing plan. Ask how the information applies to your home and goals.

Understand the different professional roles

An inspection evaluates a home’s condition; an appraisal addresses value. Ask who will arrange the appointments, what each professional covers and when you will receive the results. Your agent can help coordinate the process, while inspectors, lenders, appraisers and legal or tax advisers address their own areas of expertise.

Keep deadlines and choices visible

Ask for updates on offers, contract dates, inspection issues and next steps. Talk through options and their tradeoffs before deciding. Clear service does not mean a guaranteed price, timeline or outcome; it means understanding the information and decisions along the way.
